Betty Sue (Stunkard) Burchell Obituary

Betty Sue Burchell was born on July 29, 1934, in Klondike, Texas, to Travis L. (Buster) Stunkard and Calla Fay Martin Stunkard.  She was the oldest of their 9 children together, and one of her brothers described Betty as the “Grand Poobah” of the children.

Betty married the love of her life, Billy Joe Burchell, on June 4, 1950. Sewing since she could reach the treadle with her tippy-toes, she became an extremely talented seamstress and made clothes for family and friends, including wedding dresses for her daughter-in-law, her daughter, and her granddaughter.  She was equally well-versed in costuming for conventions, spending hours with her youngest grandchild, sharing her love for creating with cloth and thread.  She was also an outstanding quilt maker. Her artistry with a needle is legendary.

Betty left this world for the next on June 22, 2024, less than 24 hours after suffering a bad fall.  She has moved to a place where there’s no tears, no pain, no confusion, and no good-byes. Her place in our hearts is forever.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Billy Joe Burchell; her parents, Travis Stunkard and Calla Stunkard; her sisters, Helen Marie Stunkard and Fay Inell Coffman; her brothers, Shirley Ray Stunkard, Travis Leon Stunkard, and Edward James Stunkard; her niece, Teresa Stone; and her granddaughter, Jacqueline Elizabeth Burchell.

She is survived by her two children, Michael R. Burchell (wife, Marion “Beth” Burchell) of Plano, Texas, and Susan Diann Draper (husband, Robert Draper) of York, Pennsylvania; two of her grandchildren, Jennifer Kathrine Garcia (husband, Andrew Garcia) of McKinney, Texas and Joseph Michael Burchell (wife, Melissa Burchell) of Allen, Texas; great- grandchildren Brett Joseph Burchell (fiancée, Spirit Hayter) of McKinney, Texas, Jasmine Natalie “Jaz” Burchell, a student at the University of Texas – Austin, Grayson Michael Burchell, and Weston Durham Burchell both of Allen, Texas; her sister, Mary Ella Pemberton of Commerce, Texas; her brothers, Billy Bob Stunkard (wife, Kathy Stunkard) of Nacogdoches, Texas, Richard Stunkard (wife, Yu-Sook Stunkard) of Millani, Hawaii, and Tommy Lynn Stunkard (wife, Tina Stunkard) of Brownfield, Texas; and a host of nieces and nephews at a number of levels.
