Dan Cockrum Obituary

Dan Charles Cockrum, 85, of Tyler, Texas, peacefully went to meet his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Services will be Friday, January 27, 2023, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Delta Funeral Home Chapel in Cooper, Texas.   Reverend Sean Bandy will officiate, with interment to follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.

Dan was born in Peerless, Texas, December 2, 1937, to William Cullen and Orval Lee (Nelson) Cockrum.  Preceding him in death were his parents and Jean Stratton (Sister), Billy Don Cockrum (Brother), John Joseph Wakefield (Brother-in-law), Tana Michelle Stratton (Niece), Stephen Todd and Scott Reagan Stratton (Nephews). He is survived by Femoulia Ann Wakefield, Sister; Mary Bandy, (Terry) Sister; Raylene Cockrum, Sister-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews, great and great-great nieces & nephews.

Through a previous marriage to Mary Francis Duckworth, Dan was fortunate enough to love and have been loved by each and every member of her family.

Prior to transferring to the Army Reserve, Dan proudly served as a Sargent of the United States Army 1st Armed Division.  During his service he was awarded as Rifle Marksman and Carbine Sharpshooter.

Dan was a member of American Legion in Canton, Texas, and Mesquite, Texas.  He retired from Texas Department of Transportation.  At an early age he began to hunt and fish and continued to enjoy those hobbies for many years.  It is rumored he competed in at least one all-night 42 Domino game.

Son, Brother, Uncle, Step-Father, PawPaw and Friend were titles he took to heart and gave his all.  His example will continue to inspire us to live our lives with grace and grit.

In November 2021, Dan relocated to Tyler, Texas, to be near his loving sister, who will miss his daily calls, and family who truly celebrated sharing fond memories and fun times in his retirement years.

The family would like to thank Hospice of East Texas Home Place, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, Texas, 75701 for their compassionate care demonstrating respect and dignity in Dan’s last days.
