Dixie Black Obituary
Dixie Hall Black passed away February 24, 2013 in Dallas, Texas. She was born July 17, 1922 in Smith County, Texas, to Thomas Murray Hall and Dena Boucher Hall, and grew up in Tyler. Dixie graduated from North Texas Teacher's College in 1943 with a degree in Home Econimics.
Her early career included work as an Extension Servic Agent in Delta County where she met DR Black, Jr. They were married in 1947 and lived in Ben Franklin and Honey Grove, Texas during their years together before DR passed away in 2003. She was also predeceased by sisters Mildred, Sue, Nelda, and Jewell.
She is survived by her children: Carol Black Gallman and Husband Jim (Richardson, TX); Thomas Hall Black and wife Liz (Tulsa, OK) and Jane Black Wilson and husband Geoffrey (Dennis, MA) as well as niece Melinda Smith (Miami, FL) and Tim Smith (New Orleans, LA). She delighted in her grandchildren: Lindsay and husband Rene Valle; Daniel and wife Chaney Black; Margaret Black; Robert and wife Kendra Wilson; and Steven Wilson, as well as the many children and grandchildren of friends in whose lives she participated over the years.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 2 at 10:00 am at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Ben Franklin followed by a memorial service at McKenzie Methodist Church in Honey Grove at 2:00 pm. Delta Funeral Home in Cooper is in charge of the arrangements.
Dixie taught home economics in Honey Grove for more than 25 years and taught many students how to cook, sew and run a home. Her greatest happiness was in doing for others, wether in sending a birthday card or baking a fresh pound cake or chocolate pie. She would be pleased to be remembered when you gather with family and friends and enjoy something homemade to eat. If desired and in lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the Bertha Voyer Memorial Library in Honey Grove or to the charity of your choosing.
The family extends their thanks to the staff of Jackson's Place, her home for the past two years, for their care and concern as well as to the many friends who loved and cared for Dixie over her life.
